The dollar...despite news like this continues to defy gravity..

Actually, the dollar's been heading south fairly consistently for the last 7 or 8 months, which could explain why commodities (including gold) are heading up... ie. they are simply adjusting their price to the weaker dollar in which they're denominated.

Put yourself in the shoes of a money manager who has to buy something or risk losing his/her job. In the absence of decent interest rates you buy the inflating asset along with the rest of the herd Seriously, what else is there?
