7000 carat diamond was a fake

posted on Oct 13, 07 11:39AM

Did some more digging into the story reported back in Aug about the 7000 carat diamond discovery by Brett Jolly of Two point Five construction. Here orinal link:

Now the update dated 8 Oct from Tracy Ltd Diamond Intelligence Briefs. Link:

What a shame since per story, this 7000 carat "diamond" turns out to ba a piece of plastic!!!!!!!!!!!

October 8 - WORLD'S LARGEST DIAMOND" TURNS OUT TO BE PLASTIC

The discovery over a month ago of what was believed the "world's largest diamond" has come to a close. Brett Jolly, a British property developer, has denounced the stone stating that it is simply a piece of plastic. Jolly is accusing his former associates of orchestrating a scam and he has expressed his intention to lodge a complaint with the police, according to an article in the Guardian.

Jolly believes that his former associates claimed they had discovered the 7,000 carat diamond as a means to persuade Jolly into buying the land located in South Africa's North West where the "diamond" had allegedly been found. Jolly told the Guardian that he believes the fraud allegations were an attempt to make an empty mine appear economically viable.

Just prior to Jolly's confirmation of the fake diamond, Ernest Blom, the head of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses, announced that he would not assess the gem to determine whether it is authenticate. Blom stated, "I am of the opinion that the diamond could exist, but I suspect something is afoot." He further commented, "It is with this in mind that I withdraw from the process completely and disassociate myself from any further press statements."

The "discovery" of the alleged diamond was made on August 27, 2007 and photos of the stone were released shortly thereafter. The pictures revealed that the stone had remarkably smooth sides for a rough diamond which prompted skepticism within the industry. Had the stone been authenticate, it would have been more than double the size of the largest stone ever discovered – the 3,106 carat Cullinan diamond.
