Trying to understand drilling vs sampling.

From a layman's perspective, my understanding is that drilling gives a very good view of a vertical...but is much more expensive to obtain. i.e. Running the drill to depth..problems with the drill itself..analysis, etc.

Can someone please explain what a "sample" brings to the table? And how they are typically obtained?

Thanks,
