I think the fact that people are either a) in denial b) skeptical c) leery of anything new are some of the major hurdles These are not objective reasons by any means, rather subjective. I also think there are serious dollars in other areas of research and/or drugs that are not as successful and that would require someone admitting that they were wrong and now pride gets in the way
