Re: The NY Times ... A cancer survivor's perspective

posted on Jul 21, 09 10:41PM

I'm coming in late on this thread and digressing a bit, but the last respondent's comment (though presumably half joking...and I'm not offended) hits close to home for me.

We all have some of these symptoms at times. If you are a hypochondriac, you therefore convince yourself you need cancer treatment, when what you really need is a psychiatrist.

However, once you have had cancer, you can't help but become a bit paranoid. I am lucky to be alive after going through cancer in my 30's. I am not a hypochoncriac, but symptoms that most people ignore can give a survivor minor panic attacks, and you notice them all the time. I have gotten good at reassuring myself, but I wish to God there was a simple, inexpensive test for followup. In addition to possible spread of the original tumor, I am told that I have a high chance of recurrence. Accessible, early diagnosis tools would be soooo calming.

Anyone doubting me? I challenge you to take the chemo trial I was on for 6 months. I was so sick I couldn't even play with my kids some days.
