It is estimated nearly 13 to 20 million men, women and children from over 50 developing countries are engaged in small scale mining activities, with over 100 million dependent upon their activities (CASM, 2009). These activities are primary located in South America, Africa and South Asia, in some of the world’s richest mineral resource bearing regions.
