Indigenous Venezuelans are prepared as air traffic controllers

Caracas, 11 Mar (Erbol / PL) .- Indigenous Venezuelans will be trained by the National Institute of Civil Aviation as inspectors and air traffic controllers to deal with illegal mining activity in Bolivar state, regional authorities reported today.

The commander of the Fifth Infantry Division and Forest, Gustavo Gonzalez said on National Radio Venezuela from Ciudad Bolivar, 600 miles southeast of Caracas, the first group will consist of 25 members of the native peoples.

The initiative is part of an action aimed at establishing a new system of airspace control in the Venezuelan state, where there are large reserves of gold and diamonds exploited in proportion illegally.

According to estimates, 60 percent of gold production is obtained informally and much is taken out of the country without certification, which holds 363.70 tonnes of ore reserves.

Parliamentary sources have estimated that up to 90 percent of diamonds mined and illegally removed, while also recently found illegal exploitation of coltan, a mineral widely used in strategic new technologies.
