Very useful post, Highgrader! That wikinvest article is probably the best article on the BDI I've ever seen.

Another writeup, though not as good, is here .

One thing that is not often mentioned, is that the BDI is a "true" index. It's not distorted by speculation since nobody can speculate on it. You can't buy options or futures based on the BDI.
