Healthscreen Launches Diabetes Management Trial

Canadian study to manage care for 100 diabetic patients

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 17, 2009) - Healthscreen Solutions Inc. (TSX VENTURE:MDU), the leading Canadian provider of physician practice enhancement services and electronic medical record software, has launched a pilot study for the development of a chronic disease management platform with 100 diabetic patients in Southern Ontario. The study is a joint project with leading IT management software provider CA, Inc., as part of an agreement between the two companies to develop technology and services aimed at helping physicians offer chronic disease management services to their patients.

Healthscreen has identified five physicians from its Canadian network of 8,000 doctors to participate in a 12-week study to test the chronic disease management platform. Based on developing CA software technology, Healthscreen is creating a service to help individuals with diabetes to record and monitor key health statistics on a real-time basis, allowing for more precise tracking and trending of the impact of their daily behaviors such as diet and exercise, as well as adherence to prescription drugs. In addition, nurses trained in diabetic care will provide counseling to the patients, and help them schedule and manage their various appointments with labs and specialists.

"We're working with Healthscreen because we believe that combining CA technologies and Healthscreen expertise in designing practical solutions for physicians and patients can lead to the development of a game-changing service," said Chris Stakutis, vice president of emerging technologies at CA. "We look forward to the conclusion of a successful pilot phase, and working with Healthscreen to launch this world-class diabetes management service across Canada, and in other markets."

According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, more than two million Canadians live with diabetes. If left untreated or improperly managed, diabetes can result in a variety of complications, including, heart, kidney, and eye disease, or nerve damage. Health Canada reports an annual spend of over $9 billion on diabetes care. In the United States, there are more than 17.5 million diabetics, according to the American Diabetes Association, with associated health care costs of $175 billion.

"We are very excited to launch this potentially ground-breaking study that could change the way healthcare professionals, patients, and governments treat this devastating, complex and expensive disease," said Justin Belobaba, president and CEO of Healthscreen. "We hope that this study will lead to the commercialization of our next great physician service, which will help Healthscreen attain its growth goals."
