PDAC 2017 kicks off with mining investment seminars

The 85th Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada convention, one of the largest mining shows in the world, with annual participants in the 25,000 to 30,000 range, officially kicks off the evening of Sunday March 5, with a reception for the army of media covering the event at the Royal York Hotel.

Jim Carr, the Canadian Minister of Natural Resources will be the featured speaker at the media reception.

However, unofficially things got started on Friday with a mining investment conference at the Trump Toronto Hotel.

The investment conference known as the Red Cloud featured presentations from many mining exploration companies seeking and investors and investors looking for promising mining developments to build a fortune on.

Among the companies present at the Red Cloud Investment forum was Red Pine Exploration a company that has among it properties one known as its Wawa Gold Project in Wawa, Ontario.

“Wawa was one of the first mining areas in Ontario back in the 1880s and 1890s when the transcontinental railway line was put through,” explained Conrad Dix, the Senior Project Manager for Red Pine Exploration. “The area is a bit out of the lime light but the recent purchase of the Probe Mines property near Chapleau by Goldcorp there has renewed interest in the area.”

The area is part of the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt, the westerly extension of the Abitibi-Greenstone Belt that swath of gold bearing Canadian Shield land that runs from Western Quebec through the Timmins, area and onward to Wawa.

In addition to the mining exploration near Wawa the area boasts Wesdome and Richmont Gold Mines near Dubreuilville.

A second investment seminar The Subscriber Investment Summit took place on Saturday March 4 at the Toronto Hilton Hotel at 145 Richmond Street West.

The convention gets into full swing on Monday, March 6 with seminars on various aspects of Canadian, American, Latin American, African, Australian, European and Asian mining.

Other areas of significance will be seminars and presentations on mining and indigenous relations which premediate much of the global mining areas from North America through South America, Australia and Africa.

On Monday, Ontario Minister of Northern Development and Mines, Michael Gravel, will be on hand to open the Ontario Mining pavilion displaying Ontario’s mining and mining supply sector.

The Ring of Fire, the vast tract of mining potential northwest of Timmins and Northeast of Thunder Bay will again be a centre of attention with companies like Noront, KWG and Bold Resources on hand to bring the mining community up to date on their activities, successes and challenges.

Timmins and area based gold mining companies such as Tahoe Lake Shore, Kirkland Lake Gold, Primero and Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines will be present to let investors and the mining community know about developments in their operations. Two companies are on the verge of opening new gold mines in Timmins Gowest Gold and IAMGOLD. In addition, many of the area’s exploration companies will be in attendance.

The contingent from Timmins will also include Mayor Steve Black and Fred Gibbons, the president of Northern College who is also the Chair of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation.

Also on hand will be Canadian Trade-Ex, the Timmins-based organizer of the Big Event, in Timmins each May. The Canadian Mining Expo as it is known attracts participants from around the world including mining hotspots like Peru, India and other locations.

While there at the conference, they hope to attract participants to the Big Event as it offers mining, companies, investors and mining suppliers an opportunity to test drive mining equipment or to visit operating mines and see them first hand instead of through videos or power point presentations.

The Big Event takes place near the end of May or early June at the McIntyre Arena and surroundings and is crammed with the latest mining haul trucks, drilling equipment, automating mining equipment such as surface to depth drillers, safety equipment, ventilation and dewatering equipment.

This year Canadian Trade-Ex will also organize an smaller event in Sudbury, Ontario in November, 2017.
