Message: a parable

One day an explorer in Northern Ontario found an idyllic lake with perfect water and wonderful potential for a real-estate development. While being very excited about the prospects he decided that it was above his pay grade to develop it by himself so he told everyone he could about the water, the depth, the fish, the view, and how amazing a place it would be for all the rich people in Toronto to retire. Everyone who heard the message started dreaming of their retirement home, with a little porch, white picket fence and nice neighbours. Funding the development had some drawbacks. The land was near to someone who seemed to have an ancient say it what was done and it was very far away. But through encouragement many people followed the dream and bought into a scheme to develop the place for the betterment of all.

Not long after the discovery a soil sampling need to be done. So the developer asked everyone for a small chunk of their dream house as payment. Not too much just a few shingles, then a bulldozer was spotted from a conflicting developer and more parts where asked for. Not too much just the back porch. Then over the years the developer insisted that big real-estate developers would buy into the dream home and all would be well. But taxes, development fear, distance, ancient commitments, fees, salaries, planning documents, site plans and a host of other fees were required to be given. Everyone who had the dream, focused on the dream and gave up a little at a time until one day we had a two by four left. About 4 feet long? Then the holder of the development licence asked everyone for a meeting to discuss building a new development on the other side of the lake. Trust me.  We need this. Having the dream dashed the hopeful clung to the hope of an idyllic view in another direction on the lake. Why do you need a meeting? Well at the meeting we want to take 2 feet of your two by four. What for you ask? Well trust me. It is important to encourage the big developer to come here with his bulldozers, remember it’s far away. But you are beginning to wonder if really what he wants to do is use the wood to start a fire and burn down your dream home? Why can’t you tell us why you need two feet more?

The developers of the new property on the other side of the lake are right here. Trust me.

If they are right here. Please show us proof. Because we do not want to give up our 4 foot two by four.
