People of Ecuador approve new constitution

Friday, October 3, 2008
By: Stefanie Fisher

In brief

On Sept. 28, Ecuadorans approved a new, progressive constitution with 65 percent support. Even in districts where the right-wing opposition was strong, the majority of people voted in favor of the constitution.

The constitution addresses LGBT rights, environmental rights and gives the state greater control over certain sectors of the economy, such as oil and mining. It also guarantees pensions for housewives and free education and health care for all.

Speaking to supporters in the city of Guayaquil, Correa said: "Today Ecuador has decided on a new nation. The old structures are defeated. This confirms the citizens’ revolution."

The vote was an important victory for Ecuador and the people of Latin America. The new constitution will strengthen Ecuador’s progressive government at a time when Washington is bent on undermining the shift to the left in the continent.
