However, the sad truth is that this particular blockade business is not driven by strategy for any such rational (if unethical) reason. It is, in my opinion, driven by self aggrandizing empire builders in Matawa and NAN who are more interested in seeing their names in the news (and some free money) than anything else. It just so happens that they have influence with a particular Chief (and not his entire community as they would have you believe) who simply does not appear to understand that many of the other communities around him are already working out all of his "issues" directly with both the government and the companies. He appears, at this time, to be operating in isolation from his immediate neighbours. The surrounding communities are not participating in the blockade at this time.
If you analyze where the purported "support" is coming from for any of this, you will find that it is only from the management staff of Matawa and the southern member communities who have absolutely no stake in this game. Again, in my opinion, the management staff of Matawa are primarily doing this for the fame/power rush that it gives them. The southern members are following along because there is government money in this to fund their organization. In reality, most of them are very far removed from any direct benefit of the Ring of Fire and they are doing whatever they can to cash in on it indirectly.
I know these are strong words, but my exposure, both direct and indirect, to many of the players in this game has left me jaded. In the past couple of years, I have seen both the best and the very worst in people with regard to the Ring of Fire. In the case of this latest blockade business, I believe what we are seeing is the worst in greed for both power and money. The problem is that the real potential beneficiaries of all of this (the communities) are being endangered by this reckless behaviour. Meanwhile, it is incumbent upon the government and the companies involved that they make a real effort to understand all of this. It would be more effective if they all worked with the communities than with these "outsiders" and the press.
We can only hope that the real Ring of Fire communities will continue to resist this and rise to the top. It is this handful of remote and disadvantaged communities who need to benefit, not all of the southern "coyotes" who are skulking around the edge of the herd.
