NDP’S Northern Ontario plan underwhelming: Lefebvre

SUDBURY – The NDP plan to kickstart the Northern Ontario economy has stalled at the starting line, says Paul Lefebvre, Liberal candidate for Sudbury.

“The plan is simply a re-announcement of promises the NDP have made in the past with some Liberal ideas thrown in,” Lefebvre said. “Most of their promises are the same ones they made in 2008 and 2011, and like those promises, this is not a plan designed to get results.”

The two main promises in the NDP Plan are making FedNor a full standalone regional economic agency and increase its funding, and contributing $1 billion in Ring of Fire infrastructure over the next 20 years.

“Reforming FedNor ideas was first proposed in a private members bill by then Nipissing?Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota in 2011, but was killed after second reading when the 2011 election was called,” Lefebvre said.

And the Ring of Fire announcement amounts to a paltry $50 million a year over 20 years. That’s a long time to wait for progress on such an important project. In the meantime, the provincial Liberal government has committed $1 billion immediately and federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has already made clear his government will also be a key funding partner.”

As well, there’s nothing in the NDP plan for Northern municipalities, for innovation, research and job training, for seniors or for young people looking to start out in the workforce.

In contrast, a Liberal government will nearly double federal infrastructure investment to almost $125 billion – from the current $65 billion – over the next decade, a transfer growing to an additional $9.5 billion by year ten. These investments have been fully costed and vetted.

“And we all know the NDP have no plan to pay for these promises anyway,” Lefebvre said. “They’ve already decided austerity and cuts are more important than making needed investments that Canadians are asking for.”

Backgrounder:

* We will invest nearly $6 billion over the next 4 years and $20 billion over 10 years in green infrastructure. This will create greener energy, cleaner land, and more good jobs for Canadians. Our plan invests in a stronger economy and a cleaner environment.
* A Liberal government will provide $200 million annually into sector-specific research and development into mining, forestry, agriculture and energy.
* A Liberal government will provide immediate new investment of $515 million per year in core annual funding for kindergarten through grade 12 education for First Nations. This will rise to over $750 million per year by the end of our first mandate. It includes not only the funding promised and never delivered by Stephen Harper, but an additional $300 million annually.
* A Liberal government will provide a new, ten-year investment of nearly $20 billion in social infrastructure. We will prioritize significant new investment in affordable housing and seniors facilities. This investment will renew federal leadership in housing, help build more housing units and refurbish existing ones, renew current co-operative agreements, and provide operational funding support for municipalities.
