Spanish Word of the Day: oro

by Ramses on January 20, 2009

We all know the meaning of the word oro. Yes, it means “gold”. “Nothing else?” you ask? Of course it does, otherwise it wouldn’t be a Word of the Day.

So, it means “gold”, but it’s also used to describe things that twinkle, that are bright, that a worth a lot, etc., etc. Here are some interesting proverbs with the word oro:

Sentences

No es oro todo lo que reluce.
all that glitters is not gold.

Hacerse de oro.
to become very rich.

Prometer el oro y el moro.
to promise the earth/the moon.

Como los chorros del oro.
as bright as a new pin.

Ni por todo el oro del mundo.
not for all the tea in China.
