Operativo “Aurum I”

posted on Nov 07, 11 09:43AM

From the article below, it seems like the Peruvian government has really decided to eliminate the illegal mining activities in Peru. I hope that the people in Pampa Larga are realizing that they have a great opportunity to legalize the mining activities and be part of a project that will help develop their community...

Combined forces of the armed forces and the PNP face informal mining in madre de dios
Operating "Aurum I" destroyed some 80 dredgers
Authorities found machines in full extraction of gold in the rivers of Malinowski, Tambopata and Madre de Dios.

"Aurum I" operation, which has shifted to 1500 troops of the armed forces (armed forces) and the national police (PNP), continues in its goal of eradicating the illegal mining in Madre de Dios and until yesterday had destroyed nearly 80 dredges - rafts, chupadoras and carrancheras-in Malinowski, Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers.

The Directorate General of Captaincies and coast guard reported that at the time of the intervention dredges were full extraction of gold for the informal mining activity that pollutes rivers and destroyed the ecosystem in Madre de Dios.

The operation, which began Saturday and will be extended by a month, was supervised by prosecutors of the public prosecutor, who consisted of respect for the fundamental rights not presenting victims or material damage to mourn.

The ship captain, Jorge Núñez, reported that so far the operation occurs normally and resistance of the population is involved in the illegal activity, directly or indirectly, and which would amount to 40 thousand people has not been found.

Núñez reported that the area remain the Minister of the environment, Ricardo Giesecke Sara Lafosse, and of Defense Daniel Mora Zevallos, as well as the General commanders of the armed forces and the PNP.

Sustained operation

"These operations are sustained, the armed forces and national police, with the support of the public prosecutor's Office, Ministry of the environment, national water authority, among other sectors", stressed the Minister of defence.

The combined operation, which aims to eradicate the informal mining in six months, will continue today from 6: 30 in the morning.

"Aurum I" is carried out in compliance with the Decree of urgency 007-2011, prepared by the Government, which authorizes the destruction of dredgers and other similar machines operating in the Madre de Dios rivers.
Also planned tighten control of the route of illegal mining (Puerto Maldonado - Cusco), which mandated the use of helicopters, planes and speedboats for a month.

Population welcomed the operational
[1] Action against informal mining initiated by the central Government are received with hope by the population of Huepetuhe, one of the most affected by the illegal activity the jungle Department of Madre de Dios districts, said Marcos Ortega Huaracha, in charge of the Mayor of this jurisdiction.

[2] Recalled that much of the territory of Huepetuhe is used by people dedicated to the search for gold in the rivers, which, he stressed, has caused serious environmental damage. "We have generated expectations with a view to reversing environmental pollution that leaves the informal mining in the area," he said.
