Regional Government required powers against the informal mining.
Wednesday, January 25, 2012 - The Regional Piura newspaper
Piura. The Regional President Javier Atkins Lerggios, met today with the Minister of energy and mines, engineer, Jorge Merino Tafur and with the Deputy Minister of mines of the Ecuador, Federico Auquilla, putting on the table the need that the Regional Government necessary powers in order to act against illegal and informal mining was born as a justification for the lack of work in the area.

He pointed out that the Regional Government has had several round tables to address the issue of informal mining and as a result we have some products that we are going to submit to the Central Government to be taken in account when legislating, however stressed that it is expedient that will provide the regional government authority needed to take greater action against informal mining.

The Regional Authority, highlighted the importance of the workshop by representatives of Peru and Ecuador, as we have very important mineral resources which are not yet used, and with the due care of the environment, could contribute to the development of the region.

The Minister of energy and mines, Jorge Merino Tafur, pointed out that his portfolio now has powers to act against the informal mining, and ensured that they will be drastic in all measures taken to put an end to an illegal activity that far from help in the development of the city, will cause many problems.

It was during the inauguration of the bi-national meeting held in our city and grouped the best technicians of both countries to analyse topics such as electricity and hydrocarbons, mining concession petitions systems, approval of environmental impact assessment and licensing of operations, experience and exchange of information on issues of prior consultation, social license and use of protected areas.

He also said that our region has a potential of 4 thousand megawatts to produce wind power, however this still cannot be advantage in its entirety because there is only a concession; This is why Javier Atkins travelled to Spain to see the possibility of installing a this power plant in Piura.

For its part mines Deputy Minister, Ecuador, made available to his Office to join efforts against illegal and informal mining, so they can fight as soon as possible in a coordinated manner between the authorities of Peru and Ecuador.
