LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Rio Tinto Plc. and BHP Billiton Plc. have asked Chinese steelmakers with annual iron ore contracts to accept steep price increases or risk disruption in supplies from Australia, the Financial Times reports.

The companies have asked for price rises in excess of the record 71.5 percent negotiated in 2005. Rio and BHP have told their Chinese clients that some contracts will expire next Monday and supply would cease under the old terms.

Some ore could instead be diverted to the spot market where prices are higher, the paper reported.
