It costs alot of money to shut down production and board up the mine. Most companies would rather not do this since they have to lay workers off, then rehire them later on. Its a logistical nightmare. Dont know how long BHP will be able to hold out if commodities keep sinking though. The CRB commodities Index is at 2003 levels and has lost all its gains in 5 years.
