Shayne Heffernan always demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit as well as a keen sense of civic commitment and social justice that outweigh any concern for what others might think--a bit of Ted Turner, Jack Welch, Gandhi, and a touch of Marco Polo--but every inch his own man.
Growing up in the Sydney suburb of Banks town, he owned his first greyhound at the age of 13 and his first racehorse at the age of 16. He graduated from Birrong Boys High School, where he held several positions in the Student Union.
Wise beyond his years, by the time he was 19, he had begun traveling and doing business in Asia; already, he was recommending investments for clients in Australia.
After earning a degree in accounting, he served a voluntary term as a Justice of the Peace in New South Wales; later, he would hold positions with Australia’s Labor Party (one of the nation’s two major political parties). He has also worked as a licensed taxation adviser.
The late 1980’s found him working for the Subarto family, monitoring Stock Exchange activity and helping to identify illegal trading activity. Several years later, he returned to Australia.
During the latter stages of the political unrest in the Indonesian nation of East Timor, Heffernan went to the aid of Manuel Tilman and the East Timorese rebels, where he helped in winning their independence from Indonesia in 2002, and assisted in the establishment of a government.
From East Timor, Mr. Heffernan moved to the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, where, once again, he assumed the role of negotiator. There he addressed several government meetings and negotiated with Prime Minister Barrack Sope with regard to ongoing pacific issues, aid dependence, traditional authorities, foreign ownership, and central bank management. He has since been invited back to the nation a number of times to assist in the further development of Vanuatu.
He later relocated to Hong Kong and set up his own investment business. He now has more than 25 years experience trading in analyzing Asian markets, with a specialty in Venture Capital. He has managed start-up ventures enjoying market capitalization of more than half a billion dollars, and achieving a peak market cap of $15 billion. His management and oversight experience have included the mining, shipping, technology, and financial services sectors.
Now semi-retired, he has traveled from Hong Kong to Spain by land (a distance of more than 6,000 miles, or 9,000 km). After cruising the Adaman Islands, he established Heffernan Holdings for the benefit of his children. He is also co-founder of LiveTradingNews.com, an online newsletter and website dedicated to the economic development and promotion of the ASEAN nations and their business partnership with the United States.
