Today it is further bad news on the US economy, retail sales down, cost of imports higher and if that was not enough Merril Lynch has downgraded all the major banks, lehman, citi etc.

All the portfolio managers have cash in their portfolio and this is significant. These are put in short term commercial paper or gold. A move from the ECB will also change the dynamics favoring gold.
