They made a profit, although small, in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006.

In 2005, they did pretty well.

The beginning of the erosion of the housing market in 2006 and the subsequent inventory reductions by Weyerhauser and Lowes were the the main reasons for the big drop in sales.

Although getting through 2009 will be very difficult, I think they will remain viable and start to recover as economy and housing market begin to come back in 2010.
