NEWS - New Emerging Imaging Modality Will Have Significant Impact In Dentistry

posted on Apr 26, 07 12:19PM

DENVILLE, NJ (December 19, 2006)  Lantis Laser Inc. (PINKSHEETS:LLSR) a New Jersey based development company is commercializing the application of a new emerging imaging modality, optical coherence tomography (“OCT”), for early detection of oral diseases such as caries (decay) and periodontal disease.  Lantis has exclusive rights through Agreements with its Licensors.

Lantis’ OCT Dental Imaging System has spatial resolution up to 10 times that of x-ray, and provides, hitherto unseen, detailed quantitative and qualitative images of dental structures.   This significant enhancement of the dentist’s early detection capability enables implementation of non- or minimally invasive treatment to arrest and reverse disease.  Being light-based, it emits no radiation, and is the first modality capable of imaging both “hard” tissue (teeth) and “soft” tissue (gums). Scanning is achieved in the mouth with a hand-held scanner.

“It is very clear that early detection of oral diseases is a priority in aiding dentists to move to a more “medical” model of treatment,” said Stan Baron, President and CEO of Lantis. “ Dentists want to detect disease early and treat it with a minimum amount of trauma to the patient”.

OCT, discovered at MIT in the early ‘90’s, has been successfully commercialized by Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc. for ophthalmology. On November 8th, 2006 they announced the sale of the 6,000th Stratus OCT system. Other medical applications, including cardiovascular and cancer detection are in research and development. The dental application of OCT was discovered and researched by Linda Otis D.D.S., working at University of California in 1996 and researchers at Livermore.

“This is a modality that every dentist would want chairside, so our challenge was to design and build an affordable system” said CEO Baron.  Baron continued, ” Lantis plans on introducing the OCT Dental Imaging System to the profession in the second half of 2008.”
