NEWS - Lantis Laser’s Dental Imaging Technology Could Reduce Incidence of Root Canal Therapy Failures

posted on Jan 07, 08 05:20AM

DENVILLE, N.J., January 7, 2008 -- Lantis Laser Inc. (LLSR:PK - News) (http://www.lantislaser.com) reports that researchers have shown that optical coherence tomography (OCT), a novel light-based bio-medical imaging technology, has the ability to characterize the root canal walls during therapy.  The research by Dr Hagay Shemesh et al at the Academic Centre for Dentistry in Amsterdam, The Netherlands was published as the feature article in the Journal of Endodontics November 2007 issue. Using a real-time chairside OCT imaging system, dentists could view the root canal after preparation to ensure that possible causes of treatment failure have been eliminated as much as possible.

“ This is a very exciting and significant expansion of the application of OCT in dentistry, ” commented Dr Craig Gimbel, Vice-President Clinical Affairs at Lantis.  “ Currently dentists have no means of viewing the canal in detail and this research clearly shows that OCT could become the gold standard for characterizing perforations, cracks or other imperfections in the canal that contribute to treatment failure.”

The paper clearly demonstrated the ability of OCT to image root canal walls after endodontic preparation and to correlate the OCT images with histologic sections to validate the integrity of the OCT imaging system.  The conclusion of the study was that OCT proved to be reliable method to image root canal tissue in a non-destructive way.

Lantis is currently preparing its OCT Dental Imaging System for deployment in clinical use. In order to commercialise the endodontic application Lantis is designing and building the special rotary scanner that is required for the endodontic application. Lantis intends to work closely with Dr Shemesh and ACTA to fully realize the potential of OCT in endodontics.

Stan Baron, President and CEO of Lantis said, “ This research shows that the application of OCT in dentistry enables dentists to obtain views of tissue that have been hitherto unobtainable.  Once in the hands of dentists many other applications, apart from the early detection of oral diseases such as decay, will become evident and show that OCT will become indispensable in the dental office as it raises imaging and diagnostics to a new level.”
