Tourism Hit by Global Crisis

posted on Feb 03, 09 01:40AM

This story came out today in the Oman Tribune. I also read in the Ministry of information that some of the Ministers went around viewing various projects in the works, and other new projects. They did not mention the Omagine Project even though the DA is to be signed soon. I think were in for a longer wait period.

Global recession hits Sultanate’s tourism sector
By Samih Amin

MUSCAT The global financial meltdown has cast a shadow on the Sultanate’s tourism sector, according to Ibrahim Bin Baqir Al Ajami, Chairman of Tourism and Real Estate Investment Committee in the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI).

There has been a 20-40 per cent decline in hotel occupancy this winter season compared to the corresponding period last year, he said

Speaking to Oman Tribune, he denied the rumours about the suspension of some ongoing tourism projects. However, he admitted that the works relating to few projects were going at a slow pace.

He attributed the slump to the reduction in the number of foreign companies, which used to hold their meetings or conferences in the Sultanate. Owing to global meltdown, these companies preferred to stay in their respective countries this year. Besides, the crisis and its consequent lay-offs in Europe made many westerners employed in the private sectors reluctant to go abroad on holidays.

Though carnivals like Muscat Festival has revitalised the tourism movement in the Sultanate to a certain extent, it fell short of reaching the record of the previous years, he said.

He said a full assessment of the situation was not possible for the time being but expressed confidence that things would be clear by the second quarter of the year. However, meetings and discussions will continue to find solutions to this problem. If the situation continues, there will be pressing need for demobilising some expatriate workers in the tourism sector for maintaining the national workers, he added.
