Message: Investigative Journalism

Here is an introduction to investigative journalism, how it works and some of the tools they utilize.

Investigative journalism is a form of journalism in which reporters deeply investigate a single topic of interest, often involving crime, political corruption, or corporate wrongdoing. An investigative journalist may spend months or years researching and preparing a report. Investigative journalism is a primary source of information. Most investigative journalism is conducted by newspapers, wire services, and freelance journalists. Practitioners sometimes use the terms "watchdog journalism" or "accountability reporting."

An investigative reporter may make use of one or more of these tools, among others, on a single story:

  • Analysis of documents, such as lawsuits and other legal documents, tax records, government reports, regulatory reports, and corporate financial filings
  • Databases of public records
  • Investigation of technical issues, including scrutiny of government and business practices and their effects
  • Research into social and legal issues
  • Subscription research sources such as LexisNexis
  • Numerous interviews with on-the-record sources as well as, in some instances, interviews with anonymous sources (for example whistleblowers)
  • Federal or state Freedom of Information Acts to obtain documents and data from government agencies

I bring this important subject up and wish to show how it may pertain to our many incurred situations with this investment. This also may ba a futuristic compliment to the SLI story.

As we see above, investigative journalism is just that, investigative. In the course of investigations, particularly with this form of investigation, journalists will go to the very depths to uncover a story. This is perhaps unlike some incompetent forms of investigation, in which they only go so far and don,t go far enough to uncover sophisticated truths. Any story has a degree of sophistication, the more greed involved, the more sophisticated and complex it becomes. To uncover the sophistication, it takes time, to ascertain and perhaps accreditate every bit of evidence.

I would believe any investigative source of this nature would be having a field day with SLI, especially in all the legal proceedings as well as the non action by regulators. If there is any investigative journalism happening with SLI, there may be a carried factor of accountability placed in the future, by one, or more of these groups. Of course there may not be any investigative journalism happening with SLI, but who is to say? This could be a wildcard to come into play in the future, holding even employees of regulators, accountable and perhaps shedding light, where there was none.
