Work progressing on uranium enrichment factory

posted on Oct 22, 07 01:18PM
Work progressing on uranium enrichment factory EUNICE, N.M. (AP) - Buildings are being erected at the site of a uranium enrichment factory five miles east of Eunice. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission conducted a major inspection last month of the 1.5 billion dollar National Enrichment Facility. The facility is operated by Louisiana Energy Services. LES president and chief executive officer Reinhard Hinterreither says the NRC will issue a report on its findings in about a week. LES expects to have 250 to 275 permanent employees by mid-2008 instead of 210. The factory will make fuel for commercial nuclear power plants. Officials have said the factory could be ready to sell enriched uranium in 2009.
