WIN vs. RIM – WiLAN Files Patent Infringement Suit

This morning WiLAN announced that it has filed suit against Research in Motion and Research In Motion Corporation (collectively RIM) in regard to patent infringement. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Patents in debate are U.S. Patent number 5,515,369 (known as patent 369) and 6,232,969. Patent 369 is one of the dominant patents which WIN has used in several previous lawsuits against counterparties such as Acer, Apple, Broadcom, Intel, Lenovo and Motorola reaching successful settlements.

We do not expect this news to impact the stock this morning. We reiterate our Strong Buy recommendation and $14.00 per share target price.
