Banks may be giving away the long term money but they are making it up on short term loans. I am bridging 10 weeks on a real estate deal next month and BMO is charging 6% which a broker tells me is a gift. His spectrum for such loans is 7 to 12 %. Makes me think that the low long-term mortgage rates are more tied to marketing of other bank products than contributing to profit.
