Azteca Intercepts Massive Zinc, Lead, and Silver at Two Mile
SPOKANE, WASHINGTON--(Marketwire - Jan. 13, 2009) - Matthew Russell, President of Azteca Gold Corp. (TSX VENTURE:AZG) ("Azteca" or the "Company") announce first preliminary assays for diamond drill hole DDH-005A on the Company's 50% owned Two Mile Project near Osburn, Idaho in the historic Silver Valley. 41 contiguous samples were assayed through the massive mineralization and the immediately adjacent stock-work type veining as previously reported December 8, 2008. The mineral averages of these 41 samples over 85.5 FT are 9.2% Zn, 2.0% Pb, and 33.0 g/tonne Ag, within which are the following high grade zones:

- 15.5 FT of 40.0% Zn, 7.4% Pb, and 140.7 g/tonne Ag... which is included within the larger interval,

- 37.0 FT of 18.0% Zn, 3.6% Pb, and 61.9 g/tonne Ag

The highest individual assays within this 15.5 FT massive zone include 55.9% Zn, 44.7% Pb, and 1,113 g/tonne Ag.

Assay Plan for DDH-005A, DDH-005B, and DDH-006

The Company continues to split core and submit samples for assay within the areas of visually significant mineralization for hole DDH-005A from approximately 5800 FT down to the TD of 8784 FT. Assay results for holes DDH-005A, wedge-off hole DDH-005B, and DDH-006 can be expected to become continually available throughout Q1 2009.

Development of Mineral Resource

As reported December 8, 2008, the Company is currently drilling at two locations within the Two Mile Project property in an effort to develop a mineral resource. Wedge off hole DDH-005B is currently at 4906 FT with a projected on-strike offset of at least 400 FT from hole DDH-005A at TD and on-strike step-out vertical hole DDH-006 is currently at 1957 FT. Hole DDH-005A is located at N5264494 and E577935 with azimuth 0 and dip -90 with TD 8784 FT.

Assay and Interval Qualifications

Assays are uncut. True interval widths are not determinable at this time until oriented core techniques can be employed. Some irregular and short intervals were taken in the massive mineralization zones to facilitate mineral identification methodologies.

Quality Assurance and Assay Specifications

Diamond drill core samples were processed per the Company's quality assurance policy whereby chain of custody is controlled by Azteca technical personnel who transferred the samples directly to the assay lab. The assay lab has provided assay results to only those within Azteca's control pursuant to the list provided to them by Matt Russell. Assay results are preliminary and will be confirmed by the Company.

Assay methods include fire assay for Ag. ICP was used for lead and zinc followed by titration for high grade lead and zinc above 15%.

The information contained in this news release has been reviewed and approved by Matthew Russell, President and CEO, and Ed Schiller, director, the Company's Qualified Persons as defined in National Instrument 43-101.
