PRE had two choices;

If CGX was a dead horse walk away from this play and write off their 40 mil investment as a tax loss against their 1 bil+ net income.

Instead they put up 30 mill more and commited hundreds of millions more towards future exploration of Corentyne and the Annex in order to secure a 33% ownership position in this play.
