Carpathian Drilling Intersects 21.8 m of 2.91 g/t Au, Including 1.8 m of 22.0 g/t Au on the RDM Gold Project, Brazil
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 17, 2009) - Carpathian Gold Inc. (TSX:CPN) (the "Corporation" or "Carpathian") is pleased to announce the balance of the results from its 2008 diamond drill program on the 100% owned Riacho Dos Machados gold project ("RDM") located in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. This project was acquired by the Corporation in October, 2008 (see press release dated Oct. 30, 2008) and the diamond drill program comprising 64 drill holes for a total of 11,277 m. was completed in late 2008. Results from 47 drill holes were previously reported (see press releases dated Nov. 4 and Jan. 12) and the remaining 17 drill holes from the 2008 drill program are reported herein. In addition, results from the re-sampling program for another 40 diamond drill holes completed by the previous operator prior to 1996, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce ("Vale"), are also reported. Results from an additional 42 re-sampled Vale drill holes are pending and will be reported in the near future.

Drill results from the current program continue to demonstrate strong gold mineralization below the existing shallow open-pit (maximum 60 m), which in addition to confirming historical drill results from Vale, highlight significant widths of gold mineralization at open-pit grade as demonstrated in drill hole FRM-48 which intersected 21.8 m at 2.91 g/t Au.

Highlight assay intersections received (since last press release dated Jan. 12, 2009) are listed below. All of these results represent the portion of the mineralized zone that is considered to be accessible through the deepening of the open-pit. The gold mineralization occurs in a shear zone with the existing open-pit developed over a strike length of 1,350 m and to the depths corresponding to the top of fresh non-oxidized rock. A complete list of the most recent assay results can be found at the end of this press release. A map showing the location of the drill holes completed can be found on the Corporation's website at www.carpathiangold.com.

"As shown in our earlier results, the balance of the drill assay results continues to remain excellent and along with the results from the metallurgical test work support our vision for near-term production potential of open-pit operation along a strike length of approximately 2 km", said Dino Titaro, President and CEO. "The geological modeling for a NI 43-101 compliant resource estimate is essentially complete and the detailed verification of data and the resource estimation is underway. This will be followed by a preliminary economic assessment study."

The drill program completed by the Corporation in the fourth quarter of 2008 focused on the area of the previous open-pit operation along the known 1,350 m long gold zone and down to a vertical depth of approximately 200 m below the existing open-pit. In addition, drilling south of the open-pit has extended the gold mineralization 500 m along strike. The primary objective of this program is to obtain sufficient drill data to validate previous drill results, extend the gold zone along strike and define sufficient mineralization at an open-pit gold grade to justify deepening the current open-pit by approximately 200 m. The current drill program's results along with verification re-sampling of Vale drill core, are being used in an ongoing NI 43-101 compliant resource estimate.

The RDM gold project is a 22,000 hectare land parcel, comprising 12 Exploration Licenses and one Mining Concession, that covers a 20 kilometre long north-south shear zone. The Mining Concession hosts a past producing open-pit gold mine, which was previously operated by Vale between 1986 and 1997 from which oxide gold ore was mined to maximum depths of 60 m below the surface.

In 1996, the previous operator Vale, defined a 'historical resource' (non NI 43-101 compliant) of un-oxidized gold mineralization below the shallow open pits which mined oxide gold mineralization (see press release dated Nov. 4, 2008 and NI 43-101 Technical Report on the property dated February 29, 2008 and filed on www.sedar.com). The gold mineralization at RDM is shear zone hosted, within a package of Precambrian aged metamorphic rocks. This shear zone strikes 20 degrees and dips 40 to 50 degrees west. The gold mineralization is known to be continuous over a strike length of 1,350 m and open at depth to greater than 550 m at the RDM mine-site. The recently completed 2008 drilling program has demonstrated that this mineralization is now continuous for a strike length of at least 2,000 m.

Metallurgical Test Work Results

Three 50 kilogram samples were collected from fresh drill core throughout the mineralized zone for bench scale mineral process test work performed by SGS Geosol Laboratories in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The average head grade of the test samples ranged from 1.7 to 2.2 g/t Au. The test work results showed that the gold could be recovered utilizing a standard crushing, wet milling, and cyanide leaching circuit. The samples were ground to a product particle size of 80% passing 200 mesh (74 microns). The average gold extraction achieved after 24 hours of leaching with cyanide was 90.5% without carbon and 90.7% with carbon. The cyanide consumption was low at about 1.8 kg per tonne of ore.

Sample Protocol

All samples are half-core from split NQ drill core sampled on a metre by metre basis through the mineralized zone and into surrounding altered rock. Re-sampling of Vale drill core utilizes mostly quarter-core samples. All drill core samples collected from Brazil are prepared and analyzed at the independent ISO Certified ALS Chemex laboratory, located near Belo Horizonte, Brazil using industry standard fire assay techniques for gold on 50-gram sample charges with AAS finish. Coarse blanks, pulp blanks, pulp duplicates, and known gold standards are inserted on a routine basis. They consist of 12% per cent of submitted samples. In addition, on a periodic basis 3% of the crusher rejects are re-submitted and a minimum of 3% of the pulps will be analyzed at the ISO Certified SGS Laboratory near Belo Horizonte, Brazil for check assays.

Mr. Titaro is the qualified person (as defined in NI 43-101) overseeing the design and implementation of the present exploration programs. He is responsible for preparing the technical information contained in this news release.

The Corporation is a mineral exploration company focused on gold exploration primarily on its property in Romania as well as gold exploration and development on its development-stage property in Brazil. The Corporation has 207,278,454 shares outstanding.

maximum allowable dilution of three consecutive metres at less than 0.30 g/t
Au. NSI equals no significant intersection. Drill hole details i.e. Azimuth,

Notes: Assay intersections are calculated using a 0.30 g/t Au cut-off and
maximum allowable dilution of three consecutive metres at less than 0.30 g/t
Au. Drill hole details ie. Azimuth, declination and total depth are shown in
Drill Hole Descriptions in Table III below.
Table III. Drill Hole Details Table for drill holes completed by Carpathian at the RDM Project with label prefix FRM-xx. Also included are diamond drill holes completed by Vale from which Carpathian has re-sampled and assayed with drill hole prefix F-xx.
