Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF) Stock Spiked with Iron Ore Prices

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF - Get Report ) stock soared by 23.25% to $2.81 on heavy trading volume on Wednesday, as iron ore prices climbed to four-month highs today.

Cliffs Natural Resources is a Cleveland-based natural resources company that specializes in the mining and beneficiation of iron ore.

The spot price for iron ore fines with 62% iron increased by another 2.05% to $52.50 per ton on Wednesday, and is now trading at the highest level since October 21, according to Business Insider.

Prices have advanced by 37.1% throughout the past 54 trading sessions, with 8.8% of gains occurring during the past three trading sessions.

Optimism regarding steel prices has reportedly contributed to iron ore's surge.

Shares of steel companies did in fact spike today, after the government imposed tariffs of as much as 266% on cold-rolled steel imports.

About 7.84 million shares of Cliffs Natural Resources were traded today, well above the company's average trading volume of roughly 3.56 million shares per day.

Separately, TheStreet Ratings team rates the stock as a "sell" with a ratings score of D-.

Cliffs Natural Resources's weaknesses include its feeble growth in its earnings per share, weak operating cash flow, generally disappointing historical performance in the stock itself and poor profit margins.
