One drills at an angle to the structutre to find the true width of said structure(gold bearing unit). Example: If the vein is near vertical, one would step the drill back perhaps 50 m and drill at an angle of say 45degrees. THis is common practice when first carrying out an explratory hole. If you hit something, one would step back more and also trace it along strike.
