SEPT-ÎLES, QC, March 26, 2018 / CNW Telbec / - The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Minister responsible for the Northern Plan and Minister responsible for the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine region, Pierre Moreau, announced today a major investment plan of $ 280 million for the development of the facilities of the Pointe-Noire Railway and Port Corporation (SFP Pointe-Noire) in Sept-Îles. The Government of Quebec will contribute $ 30 million this year. This investment will meet the growing needs of mining companies who want to access the Pointe-Noire site in order to ship their ore by boat at a lower cost.

Mr. Moreau made the announcement along with Pierre Arcand, President of the Conseil du trésor and Minister responsible for the Côte-Nord region, and Jean D'Amour, Minister Responsible for Maritime Affairs and Minister responsible for the region. Bas-Saint-Laurent.

More specifically, the plan provides for investments, starting in 2018, of $ 30 million from the Government of Quebec. This amount is intended first of all to ensure the connection of all of Pointe-Noire's SFP transhipment infrastructures to the new wharf at the Sept-Îles Port Authority (APSI). The envelope will also ensure the protection of the environment, together with the development of the site.

The mining companies, users of the SFP Pointe-Noire infrastructure, will contribute to the financial package of the investment plan totaling $ 280 million. The Government of Quebec has also requested a contribution from the Government of Canada for this plan to support the development of Pointe-Noire, an integral part of the Eastern Canada trade corridor.

New conveyor
Minister Pierre Moreau also officially inaugurated the new SFP Pointe-Noire conveyor, which was completed in the past few days at a cost of $ 15 million. It will deliver ore from the Bloom Lake mine to the new APSI multi-user wharf for loading.

Advances in the file of Mine Arnaud
Mr. Moreau has also confirmed two important advances in the case of Mine Arnaud. An agreement has been reached between SFP Pointe-Noire and Mine Arnaud to reserve access to the Pointe-Noire facilities that will allow the transshipment of apatite ore once the mine is in operation.

The Minister also announced $ 2.5 million in government funding to enable Mine Arnaud to conduct tests to demonstrate the quality of the ore. These tests will support the search for investors.

"With this investment plan, the Government of Québec is positioning itself strategically to ensure the optimal economic development of Sept-Îles, the Côte-Nord and all of Québec. As a whole, this plan will allow us to update the Pointe-Noire facilities, in order to adequately meet the needs of the mining industry, while ensuring benefits for the North Shore and all Quebecers. It will allow us to take a step towards achieving the Plan Nord and for sustainable northern development in Quebec. "

Pierre Moreau, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Northern Plan

"Today's announcements mark a major milestone for Sept-Îles and Côte-Nord. The economic downturn is clearly a thing of the past. The government's choices have brought quick and major benefits to the region, not to mention that the structure of the SFP Pointe-Noire, based on a multi-user approach, ensures the optimization of operations on the site. "

Pierre Arcand, President of the Conseil du trésor and Minister responsible for the Côte-Nord region

"SFP Pointe-Noire is a concrete example of the complementarity between the Plan Nord and the Maritime Strategy. The growth of activities in Pointe-Noire will significantly increase shipping traffic on the St. Lawrence. The site can accommodate the largest bulk carriers, or the smaller vessels that will travel elsewhere in Quebec or the Great Lakes.

Jean D'Amour, Minister Responsible for Maritime Affairs and Minister responsible for the Bas-Saint-Laurent region
