Fortune Minerals of London, Ont., says the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board has recommended that the Tlicho all-season road be approved, subject to certain conditions. The road will stretch 97 km between the town of Whati and the territorial highway system.

Fortune has already received approval for a 47-km-long road from Whati to its NICO cobalt-gold-bismuth-copper project 160 km northwest of Yellowknife. The project has reached the development stage with a concentrator to be built at the mine site and a cobalt refinery near Saskatoon, Sask.

If financing can be arranged and the remaining approvals are received in 2018, construction at the mine could begin in early 2019, and the work would take approximately two years. The refinery will take about 18 months to build.
