western copper has been strong

this stock (wrn) has been trading strangely. it was a copper exploration company until it found the enormous penasquito silver-gold-everything else polymetallic deposit in mexico. when they figured out what they had, they changed their name to western silver, and sold penasquito to glamis for lots of $$$. then they changed their name back to western copper and continued looking for copper.

their stock price got smashed like everything else in last year's credit crunch, but then doubled in value from its panic lows like most other resource stocks. but in the past couple of weeks, it has doubled again on no news. wrn is one of the companies that should be at the very bottom of the food chain. when money first started to flow back into mining stocks, it went into the majors, then the other producers, and now it's starting to find its way into junior gold and silver companies. but base metal companies are dependent on an economic recovery, so their shares have lagged behind the precious metals explorers.

but not western copper. its projects are advanced in the sense that they have reserves, and not just resources, but even carmacks is two years away from production, and they only have $13 million in the till, not nearly enough to build a mine. i could speculate that a takeover might be in the wind, and that's just a wild guess, but nothing else seems to explain the strength of the stock.

here's a place to start if anyone is interested:
