Message: Wow. ATI sure could use a deal with ...Noront.-Algoma in the Sault

The article below came out 5 days ago. It mentions the deal between America's ATI and  China's Tsingshan. China's Tsingshan is the world's top stainless steel producer.

Tsingshan Indonesia has captive power and mines its own nickel and chrome, making it an extremely low cost producer. so they made a deal with Pittsburg's ATI.

before reading it...consider this:

ATI's(Allegheny Technologies), key markets are aerospace and defense particularly commercial jet engines (over 50% of sales), oil & gas, chemical process industry, electrical energy, and medical.

Tsingshan deal with American ATI does not paint the picture of Trump's national security focus.

Relying on imports is one thing...but Indonesia has been called a dangerous country. Errupting volcanos and tsunami generating earthquakes are a reminder of Indonesia's fiery foundation.

" Being sandwiched between such seismicity has meant the islands experience some of the strongest earthquakes and most powerful volcanic eruptions known on Earth"

But ATI's competitors were upset about ATI's plea for tarrif help..

The best reading in this post can be found in this pdf..

If you open up this link below click on the pdf showing under :Allegheny Technologies Incorporated - Supporting Document

when you open up the 25 page document you'll see stuff like this:

Question 2.b

There are two reasons for the requested exclusion. First, the JV is required to source its stainless steel slab exclusively from the Indonesian Mill. Second, the JV simply cannot obtain stainless steel slab from U.S. producers.

JV Contractual Obligation to Purchase Indonesian Stainless Steel Slabs The terms of the JV agreements commit ATI and Tsingshan Group to a long-term partnership in which the JV must exclusively purchase stainless steel slab from the Indonesian Mill13 to supply the Midland CR Plant.

The investment in the JV was made by ATI and Tsingshan based on the known costs of the Indonesian slab source, HRPF and Midland CR Plant. ATI does not have the option to purchase U.S.- made stainless steel slab.

14 The Midland CR Plant, now revitalized, re-opened and owned/operated by the JV, must be supplied with stainless steel slabs produced in Indonesia. Slabs from another source are not a sufficient or reasonable substitute under the terms of the JV agreement.

The impetus for the JV, and the resulting obligation to exclusively purchase stainless steel slabs from Indonesia, was born out of ATI’s second reason for the requested exclusion – stainless steel slabs necessary to operate the Midland Plant have never been, and are still not available from other U.S. producers.

No Sufficient and Reasonably Available Supply of Domestic Stainless Steel Slab The exclusion requested by ATI is limited to stainless steel slabs, which are not reasonably available on the U.S. market. In sum,  Virtually all U.S. production is not reasonably available on the merchant market because it is captively consumed by ATI and its U.S. competitors to produce downstream stainless steel products;

Sounds like a combo of Noront coupled with ESSAR Algoma..could be very beneficial for ATI.

Essar Algoma could provide the stainless steel slab.

The stainless using the materials from the ROF. A safer national security  bet than the JV with Tsingshan.

Considering that ATI supplies so much product for defence it sounds crazy to commit to a long term agreement with Tsingshan with an exclusive purchase deal.

Closer to home makes more sense...from a national security point of view,... And Ontario is the only dot on the planet with All ingredients to make stainless within 500km of eachother.

And..

Didn't we recently read this:

"Appearing on behalf of Algoma Steel, Kalyan Ghosh, President and CEO said, “We are thankful to the government for the $250 Million SIF Fund announcement [for the steel industry affected by tariffs] and Algoma has applied to make steel plant more sustainable in the future…modernizing so we can produce different grades of steel…which at the moment is not made in Canada and we will be able to make in the future."
