(Kitco News) - The technology of electric vehicles is evolving, and the battery of the future may determine which metals best to invest in now, this according to Kimberly Berman, director of equity research at BMO Capital Markets.
“Lithium, obviously, is the key ingredient to any chemistry that you put together, so whether the cathode is make of nickel, cobalt, manganese, or if it’s nickel, cobalt, and aluminum that’s used in Tesla products, lithium is the key ingredient to all of them,” Berman told Kitco News on the sidelines of the 121 Mining Investment conference in New York.
In particular, cobalt is needed to preserve the longevity of batteries, said Berman, who maintains that demand for cobalt will be steady until at least 2025 or an alternative for cobalt is found.
“Cobalt is part of making sure that battery is safe and that it lasts a long time,” Berman said. “When you remove it, then you’ve got all these other issues, you’ve got the longevity issue, you’ve got the safety issue that has to be addressed.”
