Message: MAC-Responsible STEEL-Part II

from the 2018 annual report of MAC

"Through 2018 ,THE MINING ASSOCIATION OF CANADA (MAC) also remained involved in supporting the development of responsible supply chains for metals and minerals.

As part of this effort, MAC worked closely with ResponsibleSteel and other partners to help advance their work and to ensure that MAC member facilities participating in TSM are well positioned to seamlessly feed into ResponsibleSteel supply chains."

Here is a draft from Responsible steel

A 76 page document. You'll see a list of the steel sectors core raw materials listed on page 75. This Responsible steel certification will apply to the raw materials for steel making.

Without this certification...good luck selling the raw materials or final steel product, going forward when this gets finalized.

Those countries breaking emission laws, safety standards, or not paying the workers properly,...will not get this certification on their goods.

Remember this award that Noront got years ago?

And Remember that they were invited to the elite group at the PRI meeting (principles of responsible investing)?

Below is the draft of the 76 pages from Responsiblesteel

http://www.responsiblesteel.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Standard-DRAFT-4.1-ResponsibleSteel2018-06-24eng.pdf

This document is the fourth draft in the development of the ResponsibleSteel standard. It describes the requirements for the responsible sourcing and production of steel that have to be met by all sites seeking ResponsibleSteel certification.

The standard defines requirements that must be met to support claims that the site is a ResponsibleSteel certified site. This version of the standard cannot be used to support any claims about the steel that is produced at the site (‘product claims’).

Product claims will only be possible when additional requirements relating to the sourcing of the raw materials used for the production of steel at the site, as well as performance thresholds in relation to embodied greenhouse gas emissions associated with the steel’s production have also been met.

These two issues – responsible sourcing and limiting greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement – are considered to be of fundamental importance, as well as being the most difficult for sites to achieve. Requirements relating to these two issues are still under development, and are now expected to be completed in 2020.

Draft 4-0 was presented to ResponsibleSteel Members and Associates at a Members Meeting on 17/18 June 2019, and following recommendations from that meeting Draft 4-1 is being made available for a further 30-day public consultation from 24 June through to 24 July 2019.
