THUNDER BAY — Electric car manufacturer Tesla is establishing vehicle charging stations along Highway 17 between Sault Ste. Marie and Kenora.

It's part of the company's plan for a network of stations from coast to coast.

Materials to build the one in Nipigon are already in place at the town's tourist information centre.

Other northwestern Ontario locations still pending include Thunder Bay, Terrace Bay, White River, Upsala, Ignace, Dryden and Kenora.

Tesla charges customers for using its so-called Superchargers, but the company's website contains a statement that promises "Tesla is committed to ensuring that Supercharger will never be a profit center."

Nipigon Mayor Richard Harvey says the company is leasing the site at the tourist centre, and is covering all the costs.

Harvey says anything that has the potential to bring more traffic into town is good for the community.

"More and more people are using electric vehicles. Some of these travellers will spend some time in Nipigon to see what's available," Harvey said.

The only only current Tesla charging station in northern Ontario is in Sudbury.
