Indonesia to build 18 nickel smelters in 2019

According to reports, Indonesia will build 18 nickel smelters this year. It was estimated that the total investment value was about US$10-15 billion.

It was reported that China is the world's largest stainless steel producer and has long dominated the nickel industry in Indonesia. Therefore, this brought strong market competition pressure to local smelter operators in Indonesia.

In addition, as Tsingshan Holding Group has invested heavily in Indonesia to build a nickel processing base, which will cause a serious blow to local Indonesian operators.

As a result, local smelter operators fully supported the government to speed up the ban on nickel sand exports from the previous scheduled 2022 to January 1, 2020, and the operators also hoped to take this opportunity to increase the added value of nickel products.
