U.S. Transportation Board approves sale of Huron Central to Brookfield

A major hurdle has been overcome that will see the sale of the short-line Huron Central Railway move into the hands of a Canadian company.
U.S. federal regulators have now approved the sale of the rail line from Genesee & Wyoming to Brookfield Infrastructure Partners.
The U.S. Surface Transportation Board has now approved the sale, paving the way for the acquisition to close by year end.
“It’s not the last approval that is needed, but it’s the last of the major approvals that needed to be completed,” said Joe Fratesi, co-chair of the local stakeholder task force working to ensure that the rail line remains operational for freight moving between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury.
“That was a hurdle that some thought was significant, but is now gone,” he said.
Brookfield Infrastructure Partners, with its successful businesses is the past, is assumed to have an interest in operating a profitable rail line.
