Suckerfish: I still don’t follow the complete process, is the Wafer the VCSEL or just another step in making the VSCEL?

Everything is made on a wafer. Below you can see a wafer processed by Wavetek.

See the small rectangles? These are individual chips. Such a chip could comprise a VCSEL, a detector, VCSEL and detector integrated together, or something much, much more complicated, like an optically enhanced CPU.

Regarding POET's timeline and targets, we know the following:

  • The detector is ready. This has been announced.
  • The VCSEL is ready. We know this, because it has been integrated with the detector.
  • VCSEL and detector are integrated. Suresh said so at the THM.

However, the chips on this particular wafer below are of no practical use, because for a functioning VCSEL transceiver a third component is missing:

  • the control electronics (transistors) must be ready, and
  • it must be integrated with VCSEL and detector on the same chip.

That's what POET is working on at the moment and that's what they want to have finished by the end of Q2, more or less.
