"Take a flier" is a colloquial term referring to the risk an investor takes when they knowingly make an investment that may result in a significant loss. It is a slang term describing the actions of a person who knowingly engages in a risky activity.

The internet purveyor of stocks, named Stock Moe referred to buying POET as taking a flier when he added it to his penny stock portfolio, and announced it yesterday.  We know better, but only by benefit of having the time to understand just how disruptive what POET has done, and how broad-based their platform will be.  The majority of penny stocks are high risk, however I do not consider us in that category any longer.  Mass production on the calendar for later this year says otherwise.  Only the beginning too.
