Thanks Lumenge, and not that there was any doubt we are on the right track, I've extracted a few tidbits from Cisco event Barcelona 2020 earlier this year.

High Speed Optics: The Road to 400G and Beyond

  • As speed increases, cost of pluggable optics makes up a more significant cost of connectivity, therefore optics requires more cost innovation.
  • DCI (data centre interconnects) driving cost/power/size, will be >30% of the market
  • Interconnect costs impact data centre architecture
  • Year 5 of 400 GbE is expected to be 20X larger than year 5 of 100GbE, driven by multiple markets looking to adopt at the same time.
  • Optical technology is the key enabler for systems to maintain pace with requirements of bandwidth pressures.
  • Need to look to packaging simplification to increase yield and reduce costs: fewer lanes and more integration to lower cost, size and power.
  • Industry is looking for a "transceiver on a chip", optical devices made cheaply using standard CMOS fabrication techniques, integrated with microelectronics, that can generate, modulate, process and detect light signals.  "Silicon photonics is the most promising technology to do this".

POET, right place at the right time, just need to deliver.
