Message: Hydro-Quebec under pressured to close Gentilly-2 nuclear plant

I believe Gentilly-2 foreclosure would be a hard sell , although i would'nt mind personaly .

It's one of the few high tech project where specialised labour is hired in this province and where university students in physic and related engineering can still do research and hope for jobs . Although it produces about 3% of the electricity produced in the province i think the govt. and Hydro Quebec want very much to keep this expertise in the province in the long run .

I'm not sure the PQ would follow up on their recent engagement about foreclosure if they were eventualy be elected . As we know in politics promises are easier made then followed . But indeed there's been a long opposition to nuclear here for a long time .

Nuclear wastes from START ( Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty ) between the US and Russia have been regularly shipped through the St-Lawrence in order to be buried in Ontario deep in the Canadian Shield for a number of years now ( i think since about 1994 ) , and it`s always made people uneasy about a possible ship accident .

On another note Italy is considering a one year ban on nuclear energy and some in the US are asking the govt. to reconsider the nuclear energy program . Nuclear wastes produced by the industry remains a concern as no one wants them to be buried in their backyard and are accumulated by the industry . The same is true here as it was mentioned recently that Gentilly-2 has acumulated 2500 tons of nuclear wastes . The problem will be regelated to future generations , it`s a scary thought for the future .

Nuclear energy development remains the most important part of the world energy program for the next couple of decades , among the major developpers are China , part of Europe and the US , and although i`m not aware of the Russian future plans in this regard , i would believe they would also be involved to some degree . In Canada the bulk of the industry is mostly developping in Ontario

Regards

Tec
