This takes me back to speculation and discussion earlier this year on agoracom regarding BP - I recall a successful BP M&A VP discussing finding and picking new pipeline candidates - he commented that the dilemna is finding the successful candidate early - however R&D can be a costly and fruitless endeavor . He also cautioned that waiting too long can also be very costly since once safety and efficacy are established a BP bidding war will ensue and drive the price up considerably.
