Message: Flu vs. Covid19

Growacet,

You repeatedly here and also on Twitter seem to downplay me seriousness of Covid19. I am concerned that you are not consulting good sources of information.

There is strong evidence that SARS-COV2 is more contagious than flu due to both its droplet/airborne means of transmission and the ability of it to stay alive and infectious on surfaces for much longer than the flu.

This virus is not yet so pervasive that it is considered endemic. This contrasts to flu which has been around longer to reach into all areas of the world. We are still months and months and months away from this point. The peak is nowhere to be seen yet in US, in Canada or elsewhere.

There is a vaccine for flu, but not for SARS-COV2. People have no immune protection to this. This is a serious concern.

The mortality rate of Covid19 is much higher than flu. Even the most conservative estimate has it being five times for deadly. But most estimates are much higher. Combine the higher death rate with the increased infectivity/contagiousness and that is a lot more potential deaths than flu.

The reported cases and deaths are likely an underestimate die to a lag in amount and quality of testing. The numbers are as good as the testing.

Think about how much worse things would be with Covid19 if social distancing, travel restrictions, widespread testing, event cancellations, stay at home orders, etc. were not in place. These things ARE NOT done for the recurring annual flu season.

Please consider all of these factors before downplaying the seriousness of this virus and spreading a minority opinion that is not consistent with scientist facts and health recommendations from trusted organizations (WHO, CDC, etc).
