"Google states that there is less than 1000 hit by the coronavirus. Hard to believe that to be the case."
The numbers are likely much higher. The numbers only reflect how wide the net has been cast and there may not be widespread testing yet. There are likely regions of Mexico (big country) that will be hit harder and faster then others, in line with other hot spots in the world. We are still a long time away from this virus being widespread throughout the world. It is still spreading and has not yet had time to spread the infection everywhere. It will, inevitably and eventually, in my opinion. That's the point of flattening the curve. Slow things down to prevent overwhelming the health care system, to identify therapies that might lessen the mortality, to ramp up supply of key items (ventilators, etc), get a head start on a vaccine, allow research to better understand the virus, to develop better and faster testing methods, etc.
This is no standard flu. It is more deadly and more infectious. Easy math that when those two factors are weighed together that results in a greater death toll than standard flu.
